2009 CREC Teacher of the Year
Haia Spiegel has been part of CREC’s Greater Hartford Academy of Mathematics and Science since its inception in 2000, as an Earth, Astronomy and Environmental Science teacher (9-12). Prior to teaching at CREC she taught at Manchester High School, and in the UK. In 2009 she received the CREC Teacher of the Year award for her contributions in STEM Education.
She is a team member of the NASA Explorer Schools which help promote and support the incorporation of NASA content and programs into science, technology and mathematics curricula in classroom grades 4-12. Through this program incorporating elementary, middle and high schools she was able to take the students’ experiment on a NASA microgravity flight from Houston Space center. She also attended a NASA winter workshop at Yellowstone National Park and workshops at Goddard Space Center and Marshall Space center. The acquired knowledge is passed to her students and to colleagues at CREC.
Haia Spiegel also collaborates with the DEP through project SEARCH, and together with her students assesses the health of Connecticut rivers. She partners with The Harvard Smithsonian Institute to help students discover planets outside our Solar System and with MIT in a special Science and Engineering Program for Teachers. She is a strong advocate for inquiry learning in heterogeneous classes, and helping younger teachers feel comfortable in the demanding educational setting.
She has studied in Israel, the UK (post graduate) and USA (Master of City and Regional Planning, College of Architecture, Clemson University and Education and Biology from Clemson University, SC). She lives with her husband in West Hartford, CT and has two daughters attending college.
